My most favorite activity when I visited my grandmother was to watch her make buttermilk biscuits before each meal. The nimbleness of her fingers as she gently mixed the flour, buttermilk and lard in her wooden bowl was amazing. The end result was a pile of fluffy biscuits with a crisp outer crust. Truly Heaven on earth! In my attempts to replicate the process, I ended up with biscuits that resulted in a hard, hockey pucks that could keep the NHL amply supplied for generations. That being said, my father and I set out to create a mix that anyone could bake successfully… even me. Eureka! Inspired by grandma, you can now enjoy the delicious buttermilk taste of fluffy biscuits finished with a cripsy outer crust.
Just add water. Now, for the secret… it’s all in how you mix them. When you add the water, mix it just enough to moisten all the ingredients. Enjoy these southern drop biscuits with your favorite jam, jelly, molasses or my favorite… butter and honey. YUM!
If you want a real treat anytime of the day just add some shredded cheese to the mix and coat the tops with a little garlic butter before you bake them. DIRECTIONS: Easy Drop Biscuits: Preheat oven to 450 F. Pour approximately 2 cups of mix in bowl and add ~3/4 cup of water and mix using as few strokes as possible to moisten dough. Drop portions of dough onto lightly greased baking pan. Place in oven and cook for 10 to 12 minutes or until done. Yield 12-15 Biscuits
